This is a family who, on the face of it, seem to have it all, but look below the surface and this is a family who are incredibly dysfunctional (I couldn't even begin to imagine having a mother like Allegra!). Their power, wealth and greed is what drives them, and is intoxicating but it definitely comes at a price, which is something we see in the prologue when the family have a sacrifice to make to maintain their status. Skip four years and something is lurking that could change everything.
I have to say that I absolutely loved this book and read it in a day (yes, I was lying on a sunbed at the time!) What did I love? The lure of the family and their perspective on what is morally acceptable; their wealth and the contrast with the cost of that. The paranormal aspect of the book added an extra dimension with The Ruin a dark and twisty place where it's easy to loose yourself. The element of the unknown: who or what is killing everyone? - I was left guessing until the end! The pace of the plot makes it difficult to put the book down. I found Cicely an interesting character, her ability to discover secrets means she can easily hide in the shadows. Her mother clearly hates her and she has always been the one who doesn't quite fit in. When her family start dying, she is determined to use it as a way to prove herself
Publishing on the 18th June, Our Wicked Gifts is a dark and twisty thriller that will get under your skin and will have readers questioning everyone and everything.
